DATE: Vintage, c.1989

Simple vintage solitaire ring set with a vibrant opal cabochon in a crimped bezel setting. Crafted in 9 karat gold with London hallmarks dating it to 1989. The stone displays excellent play of colour with greens, blues, orange, yellow, and the highly sought-after red.

In Arab culture, it is believed that the stone fell from heaven, in flashes of lightening giving it it's array of colours. In Medieval Europe, Opals were considered unlucky as they looked like the eye of evil animals. This was said to bring great harm to people and even towns, so the stone was avoided.
